In the presence of high pressure and a strong electric field, chlorine can accept an electron from xenon, forming an unstable xenon chloride molecule. These molecules, known as excimers, quickly revert to their original elements, chlorine and xenon. The light emitted from the excited state of the unstable xenon chloride excimer is termed 308nm excimer light.
